The modern black powder firearms use a percussion cap “in-line” with the barrel. They are available with a break-open action or a bolt-type action.
Side Lock-Flintlock
The original muzzle loader, the flintlock uses a flint clamped to the hammer. When the hammer falls, the flint strikes a striker plate which causes a spark that ignites the powder.
Side-Lock, Percussion
More reliable and less prone to moisture, the percussion cap design of the muzzle loader uses a primer cap that is struck by he hammer, causing ignition of the black powder.
